Best Places to Stay in Montenegro: 40+ Incredible Apartments, Airbnbs & Hotels to Upgrade Your Trip

Amazing accommodations, guest houses, and Airbnbs in Montenegro

One of the best ways to travel in Montenegro is to live locally — either by trying local foods, taking bus journeys alongside Montenegrins, or choosing a local accommodation over a hotel. While food and transportation are better explained in my Ultimate Guide to Montenegro (click to check it out), I can help with finding local accommodations.

I want to preface this by saying that Montenegro is filled with stunning/gorgeous/breathtaking/(insert adjective here) views, and it would be a total disservice to the country if I were to put some boring accommodations on here, wouldn’t you agree? ;)

Which is why I chose only the most unique accommodations and Airbnbs in Montenegro! From sunny beachside villas to mountain cabins, luxe penthouses to idyllic local stone houses, and everything in between, I’m sure you’ll find at least a few places to add to your wishlist.

Likewise, when researching this blog post, I left no city behind! From amazing Airbnbs in Kotor to apartments with bay views in Budva, to smaller and less-touristy cities like Ulcinj and Herceg Novi, and even going up north to the mountains, I present… the best guest houses, apartments, and Airbnbs in Montenegro!

Idemo! (Let’s go!) Continue reading

Gradska Kafana Herceg Novi

Although once part of Yugoslavia, Montenegro is quickly paving its own path as the next big tourist destination. With amazing sightseeing opportunities like the Old Town of Kotor, the Montenegrin Riviera (Hello, Budva!), and an abundance of nature, it’s no wonder why Montenegro is one of the most popular countries in the Balkans.

However, one of the most popular questions that my friends asked me after traveling to Montenegro was, How much does it cost to travel to Montenegro?

And that, my friends, was the beginning of this blog post!

I’ll be uncovering the average cost of a trip to Montenegro, including everything from accommodations, food and drinks, transportation, activities/sightseeing, and more. Look out for special money-saving tips along the way as well! Continue reading

From jaw-dropping views of the rugged Montenegrin mountains to the warm splashes of water along the coast, to idyllic cobblestone streets running through the city… There’s something for every type of traveler once they come to Montenegro.

Let’s take a really quick look at the figures to see what I’m talking about:

Montenegro has five official national parks and around 80% of the country is covered in mountains. In fact, the country’s name, Montenegro, means ‘black mountain’!

Of course, we can’t forget about its gorgeous riviera — Montenegro has more than 290 km (180 mi) of coastline and dozens of world-class beaches.

Tivat, Kotor, or Budva: Which Part of Montenegro is Right For You?

Tivat-Kotor-or-Budva-Montenego

When planning a trip to Montenegro, one of the first questions that might come to your mind is where do I stay if it’s my first time in Montenegro?

For the majority of other Balkan countries, the answer is pretty simple — most travelers start their journey in the capital and work outwards, so you might fly and stay in Tirana, Albania, or perhaps Belgrade in Serbia, or even Sarajevo in Bosnia in Herzegovina. Simple, right?

But with Montenegro, it’s a little different.

Montenegro’s capital, Podgorica, is inland and doesn’t offer much to do (for those interested, I have a post on The Most Boring Capital Ever). In fact, most of the action is happening along the Bay of Kotor, which is where “the big three” cities are located. Let’s break it down:

The closest airport is located in Tivat (which must mean it’s the gateway to the Montenegrin coast, right?)

The most popular destination is in Kotor (with fortresses, a beautiful Old Town, and a cruise port, how can it not cinch this coveted title?)

… and all the nightlife is in Budva (which means that’s where all the excitement is?)

To add insult to injury, all three cities are within a 15-30 minute drive of each other!

Phew, I think I added even more confusion to the whole question, didn’t I? Thankfully, that’s what this guide is for!  Continue reading
