20 Best Day Trips From Sarajevo – The Best Hidden Gems in Bosnia & Herzegovina
If you’ve read my other Bosnia & Herzegovina blog posts, you might have seen me sing praises for Sarajevo. Seriously, it’s one of the most underrated capitals in Europe (and maybe even the world!)
If you’re planning to travel to Sarajevo and have a few extra days, why not check out some of the best day trips from Sajarevo as well?
Whether it’s a quick getaway a few kilometers away or an entire weekend trip from Sarajevo, there are dozens of fantastic options! From mysterious pyramids to charming wooden mills set in nature, a secret underground bunker, and ancient fortresses, I’m sure that you’ll find an option or two that’ll interest you :)
To make it easier, I’ve divided this blog post into three sections: short, medium, and long day trips. The short day trips from Sarajevo are all less than 100 kilometers (under a 1.5 hour drive); the medium day trips are between 100 to 150 kilometers (under 3 hours); and the longer day trips are 150+ kilometers.
Ready to see some of the best places to visit near Sarajevo? Let’s check it out!
SHORT DAY TRIPS FROM SARAJEVO (Under 100 Kilometers)
TREBEVIĆ
Distance from Sarajevo: 19 km (12 mi)
One of the easiest day trips from Sarajevo is right next to the city — and it’s none other than Mt. Trebevic!
Located on the southern side of Sarajevo, you can reach the top via a scenic 8-minute cable car trip. There are plenty of things to do near the mountain, from taking in the scenery at the viewpoint to hiking, enjoying a picnic, zip lining, and even skiing during the winter.
However, one of the most unique attractions in Sarajevo is also located here. The abandoned bobsled track, which was built for the 1984 Winter Olympics, begins near the cable car station and goes all the way back down to Sarajevo’s city center. It’s an excellent way to see some of the city’s colorful street art and get a workout at the same time.

VISOKO
Distance from Sarajevo: 33 km (20.5 mi)
Thanks to its super close proximity and convenient transportation links, Visoko is one of the most popular day trips from Sarajevo. However, that’s not all: it’s also home to the mystical Bosnian pyramids!
Yep, you heard that right. Around 2005, a man by the name of Semir Osmanagić ‘accidentally’ discovered a pyramid during an excavation, and said this structure was the ‘first Pyramid in Europe.’
Nowadays, Visoko is known for its Valley of Pyramids, which contain five of these triangular structures scattered around the city. The Pyramid of the Sun is the most famous (and original), but there’s also the Pyramid of the Moon, Pyramid of the Dragon. Pyramid of Love, and the Temple of the Earth.

JAHORINA
Distance from Sarajevo: 35 km (23 mi)
There’s no doubt that Jahorina is the best place to visit in Bosnia in winter. Skiers and snowboarders from around the country (and world) come to enjoy more than 45 km of world-class slopes of all difficulty levels. In fact, there’s a reason why: Jahorina was the one of the venues used for the Sarajevo Winter Olympics in 1984!
Besides slick slopes, there are plenty of cafes and cozy restaurants to check out après ski.
If you’re visiting Sarajevo during the winter, why not catch some snow with this easy day trip?

LUKOMIR
Distance from Sarajevo: 53 km (33 mi)
If you’re sick and tired of the hustle and bustle of daily life, take a trip to somewhere more peaceful… and I have just the place.
Lukomir, which takes the title as the highest village in Bosnia, is home to just a few farmer and herder families. Thanks to its remote location and quiet atmosphere, Lukomir has retained its tranquil spirit and traditional lifestyle for centuries.
The best way to explore Lukomir is by taking a guided tour. There’s a few reasons why: the road up to the village is rough (and all tours are done on an off-road vehicle!), your guide will help translate if you want to chat with the locals, and you’ll learn more about the history of the village from an expert.

KRALJEVA SUTJESKA
Distance from Sarajevo: 60 km (37 mi)
Regardless of its modest appearance, the municipality of Kakanj is home to one of the most beautiful villages in Bosnia: Kraljeva Sutjeska!
The main attraction of Kraljeva Sutjeska is the Franciscan monastery, which looks more like a graceful castle out of Bavaria than a religious building. The monastery also contains some of the most valuable books in all of Bosnia, and has a collection of more than 11,000 books!
You can see Kraljeva Sutjeska in an hour or two, and it makes for a great stop along a multi-journey day trip from Sarajevo.

KONJIC
Distance from Sarajevo: 61 km (38 mi)
Most people wouldn’t use the words ‘charming town’ and ‘nuclear bunker’ in one sentence, but here we are…
Located just an hour away from Sarajevo, Konjic houses one of the most hidden and secretive projects in then-Yugoslavia: Tito’s Bunker!
Josip Broz Tito ruled Yugoslavia for nearly 30 years (1953 to 1980) and, being in a position of power for such a long time, decided to build an underground nuclear bunker if things went sour (this was the Cold War era, after all). Thankfully, the bunker never fulfilled its true purpose, and wasn’t even discovered until the 1990s — after Yugoslavia broke up.
If you’re curious about Tito’s Bunker, there are plenty of day trips and guided tours, with many departing daily from Sarajevo (such as this top-rated tour!).
On a lighter note, Konjic is also famous for its beautiful wood carving (it’s on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage!), and can be found on furniture, decorative objects, and even souvenirs. Some families have preserved the craft to this day (check out the stores selling handmade goods), and there’s even a woodcarving museum in the city center.

THE SAND PYRAMIDS OF FOČA
Distance from Sarajevo: 71 km (44 mi)
When you think of the words sand pyramids, you might start to imagine actual pyramids (a la those in Visoko, above) made out of sand, but this is actually inaccurate. Instead, the Foca sand pyramids look more like jagged monolith rock formations (similar to those in Cappadocia!)
Although these pyramids are about 20 meters in height, they’re still growing and evolving — who knows what they’ll look like in one hundred or one thousand years?

ETHNO VILLAGE ČARDACI
Distance from Sarajevo: 79 km (49 mi)
If you prefer to savor the leisurely pace of a traditional village (or simply want to take a quick break from city life), I have just the thing: a trip to Etno Village Cardaci!
This adorable village is the definition of a bucolic paradise: Čardaci is set in a peaceful little area of farmland and surrounded by beautiful nature, like a river and park. The 33 rooms and cabins are decorated in traditional Bosnian elements, while the on-site restaurant serves local specialties to the region.
The etno village is an excellent place to stop overnight, especially if you’re planning to drive further along to northern or western Bosnia & Herzegovina.

TRAVNIK
Distance from Sarajevo: 92 km (57 mi)
Thanks to its beautiful Old Town and historical charms, Travnik is one of the most popular day trips from Sarajevo.
Despite its small population (there are less than 60,000 locals), Travnik played an important role in Bosnia’s history. It was a capital city between 1699 to 1850 during the Ottoman Empire, and still has many relics from that point in history.
One of the most beautiful landmarks in Travnik is the Ornamented Mosque, which contains colorful paintings and decorations on both the interior and exterior. Be sure to stop by the Art Sahdan shop on the side (the owner makes gorgeous handmade souvenirs!) and try the local specialty at the legendary Ćevabdžinica Hari.

SUTJESKA NATIONAL PARK
Distance from Sarajevo: 107 km (65 mi)
Nicknamed the ‘Yosemite of Bosnia,’ Sutjeska National Park is the oldest and largest national park in the entire country. It’s also home to the highest peak in Bosnia (Mt Maglić) and one of Europe’s last primeval forests. Pretty cool, huh?
From epic hiking trails to jaw-dropping panoramic views, you’ll find it at Sutjeska National Park!

VISEGRAD
Distance from Sarajevo: 113 km (70 mi)
If there’s one town that’s sure to take your breath away, it’s none other than Višegrad. Nestled atop the Drina River, Višegrad is an incredibly picturesque town thanks to its cozy city center and magnificent blue and green hues along the riverside promenade. That’s before I even mention the beautiful Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge, which is the so-called symbol of the city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site!
In fact, the bridge is the subject of many works, but perhaps the most famous is Ivo Andric’s The Bridge on the Drina, which won a Nobel Prize in Literature for its eloquent depiction. It’s an excellent way to familiarize yourself with the landmark before you go!
Besides the bridge, Visegrad’s other claim to fame is Andrićgrad, which is a tourist complex dedicated to the aforementioned Ivo Andric.
To get the ‘full picture,’ I recommend combining your trip to Visegrad with a 35-minute drive across the border. There you’ll find Mokra Gora, one of the most beautiful natural regions in Serbia, as well as another tourist complex called Drvengrad. Most tours stop at both places, but if you’re visiting independently, I recommend checking out my West Serbia Travel Guide for a complete overview, as well as my Drvengrad Travel Guide if for an in-depth look at the famous resort. :)

RELAX NEAR PROKOŠKO LAKE & GO HIKING ON MT. VRANICA
Distance from Sarajevo: 115 km (72 mi)
Just two hours west of Sarajevo is one of the most popular destinations for hiking in Bosnia: the Vranic mountain range!
If you prefer to enjoy the great outdoors during your travels, definitely consider adding this spot to your itinerary. Mt Vranica is such an idyllic natural paradise that it’s often compared to Switzerland (and proudly carries the title of ‘the Bosnian Swiss Alps’). It’s also close to Prokoško Lake, an unspoiled paradise with clear water and adorable katuni huts used by local shepherds.

TUZLA
Distance from Sarajevo: 120 km (75 mi)
After the pyramids in Visoko and the sand pyramids in Foca, let’s continue our tour of Bosnia’s natural wonders with a trip to Tuzla!
Despite being the third-largest city in Bosnia, Tuzla is still fairly off the beaten path for many tourists. However, what if I told you that Tuzla is one of the only cities in the world that has a beach right in the middle of the city?
That’s not all: Tuzla’s main attraction are the three salt lakes, which are rumored to have health benefits. Tuzla is so famous for its salt that many places are named after this mineral, including Solni Trg (Salt Square), Solina River (Salt River), and Slana Banja (Salty Spa).

RAMA LAKE
Distance from Sarajevo: 123 km (76 mi)
One of the most surprising facts about Bosnia & Herzegovina is that it’s home to more than 100 lakes! While I’ve already covered a few in this blog post, let’s take a look at one of the most beautiful lakes in Bosnia: Rama Lake!
Also known as Ramsko Jezero, this huge man-made lake is a popular destination during the summer for many locals. Dotted with dozens of bays and islands, Rama Lake is also home to a magnificent Franciscan Monastery, whose architecture is like an attraction in its own right!
Rama Lake is best visited during the summer, especially if you want to enjoy adventurous activities like fishing, hiking, swimming, and kayaking.

MOSTAR & BLAGAJ
Distance from Sarajevo: 130 km (81 mi)
Besides Sarajevo, Mostar is the most popular tourist destination in Bosnia & Herzegovina. Its main attraction is the UNESCO-listed Stari Most (Old Bridge), which gains international notoriety every year thanks to the Red Bull bridge diving competition.
However, you don’t have to visit Mostar during the festival if you want to see the famous bridge divers — they’re out in full swing almost every day!
Mostar also has a quaint bazaar with lots of traditional souvenirs, charming cobblestone alleys, and well-preserved Ottoman buildings. If you have an extra hour or two, take the short drive from Mostar to Blagaj, a small village that’s famous for the intricate Dervish House. Click here to get inspired with my Blagaj travel guide!
That’s not all: whether it’s by bus, car, or train, the trip from Sarajevo to Mostar is one of the most beautiful journeys in Europe!

SREBRENIK FORTRESS
Distance from Sarajevo: 148 km (92 mi)
If you’re going to visit Tuzla (mentioned two points before), make sure to add a quick stop at Srebrenik Fortress as well!
Perched high above the surrounding forest, Srebrenik Fortress is the oldest castle in Bosnia and, as such, has a rich history. While nobody knows when it was built, early records show that it was mentioned in the early 1300s.
Nowadays, visitors can use the drawbridge to enter the area and make the steep trek to the top — and be rewarded with a gorgeous view of the surrounding vistas!

MEDJUGORJE
Distance from Sarajevo: 155 km (97 mi)
About 30 minutes outside of Mostar is Međugorje, one of the major pilgrimage sites of Bosnia & Herzegovina.
It all began back in 1981, when a few local kids saw the Virgin Mary on a hill near the village. Nowadays, this small town of 4,500 people sees up to 1 million visitors per year! The most popular times to visit include the anniversary of the first apparitions (in June), as well as feast days and holidays like Easter and Christmas.
If you’re visiting from Sarajevo, it’s good to know that most tours start from Mostar. Otherwise, you could do this trip by renting a car.

JAJCE & MLINČIĆI
Distance from Sarajevo: 160 km (100 mi)
Jajce is probably one of the most delightful little villages that you’ve never heard of. Time to change that with a fun day trip!
Located northwest of Sarajevo, Jajce’s claim to fame is its beautiful waterfalls, which are often selected as some of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world. The waterfalls are created at the spot where two rivers, the Pliva and Vrbas, meet — and the best way to see this natural phenomenon is at the expansive viewing deck in front.
Just a 10-minute drive away is another idyllic attraction: Mlinčići! This network of two dozen wooden mills was built hundreds of years ago, and still stand to this day. Best of all, you can walk across the bridge and see each mill up close. :)

KRAVICA WATERFALLS
Distance from Sarajevo: 165 km (103 mi)
If you’re traveling to the south but still want to see jaw-dropping waterfalls, no worries — check out Kravica Waterfalls instead! Easily done on a day trip from Sarajevo (2.5 hours) or Mostar (45 minutes), the Kravica Waterfalls can easily rival Plitvice Lakes, its famous cousin across the border.
If you’re looking at the photo above and thinking that looks like an amazing place to take a dip, you’re in luck: visitors can swim in the Kravica waterfalls in the summer (or rather, the pools near the falls ) — be sure to visit between June to October for the best weather.

NEUM
Distance from Sarajevo: 208 km (130 mi)
Last but certainly not least, we have Bosnia’s best (and only) beach destination: Neum! While this is probably one of the furthest day trips from Sarajevo, it’s worth the journey to this 22-kilometer enclave of Bosnian beaches.
Hidden behind a closed bay, Neum is a hidden paradise of sandy beaches and calm waters. Swim and enjoy some sun during the day, or walk along the seaside promenade once the sun goes down.
