Looking for some of the most unique accommodations in Bosnia and Herzegovina? You’re in the right place!
Although the country has plenty of lovely guesthouses and hotels, sometimes you just want something a little more off-the-beaten path and unique. I have just the thing:
How about an authentic Bosnian ethno village, with traditional buildings taken from all over the country and painstakingly reconstructed to their former glory?
Or perhaps a historic 500-year old Turkish bath-turned-hotel in the historical center of Sarajevo?
Maybe you’re in the mood to relax on a terrace with a jaw-dropping view of Mostar’s Old Bridge? Heck, why not go all out and stay in a pyramid or a windmill?
You’ll find all that — and much more — in this blog post. This blog post has 20+ of the most unique hotels from all over Bosnia and Herzegovina, including popular destinations like Sarajevo and Mostar, as well as lesser-known gems like Bihac, Međugorje, Travnik, and much more.
Best of all, these hotels, guesthouses, resorts, and apartments are divided by region, along with a short snippet to get you better acquainted with the area.
SARAJEVO
As the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, there’s a pretty good chance that you’ll either start or end your trip in this city — so why not make it memorable and stay at a unique hotel?
Sarajevo is a city of contrasts: on one street you’ll see intricate Ottoman Empire architecture, while right across is a modern skyscraper.
As far as tourist attractions go, Sarajevo has an eclectic mix of laid-back activities and active sightseeing. It’s an absolute delight to walk through the Old Town, as you hear the clicking and clacking of coppersmiths as they continue their family’s legacy. Don’t forget to walk along the Abandoned Bobsled track above the city (take the cable car for unforgettable views!), explore the city’s museums, or just chill out near the Sebilj Fountain with a burek in hand.
İsa Begov Hamam Hotel
What hotel in Sarajevo combines beautiful architecture, 500 years of history, and warm hospitality? Only the Isa Begov Hamam Hotel!
Isa Begov has a long and interesting history: the original structure was built sometime in the mid-1400s when the Kingdom of Bosnia was overtaken by the Ottoman Empire, although the current building traces its origins back to 1890.
The Isa Begov is Sarajevo’s first (and oldest) hamam, although the majority of the public baths and pools were damaged in the Balkan Wars. After the war ended, the damaged building was rebuilt into a hotel and assimilated parts of the old bath house.
Nowadays, guests can get a glimpse of the Ottoman Empire in one of the 15 bespoke rooms and suites, featuring handmade furniture, comfortable beds, and complimentary access to the Turkish baths!

ibis Styles Sarajevo
Is this not one of the most stylish hotels you’ve ever seen? They’ve really got the branding on point, that’s for sure.
Modern design meets Bosnian motifs at Ibis Styles, which is decorated from head to toe (or rather, lobby to terrace) in traditional details.
At the breakfast lobby guests can marvel at the ornate copper dishes, the suites have LED signs with local slang (such as vozdrav, a pig latin expression of saying hello), and the lobby is decked out in colorful rugs and Vucko paintings.

MOSTAR
If Sarajevo is the capital of Bosnia & Herzegovina, then Mostar is definitely the historical heart. After traveling to Mostar, many travelers have remarked how it’s the most beautiful town in the entire country and radiates a certain ancient charm.
Indeed, it’s no wonder why: no matter where you go, you’ll be greeted by centuries-old stone buildings, impressive bridges, and cobblestone streets, many of which were influenced by the country’s 400+ years of Ottoman rule.
Pssst… Planning to visit Mostar? I have a guide that talks about the best way to get from Sarajevo to Mostar (or vice versa), and one of the best day trips from Mostar (a gorgeous Dervish house by the river!)
Bosnian National Monument Muslibegovic House
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to go back in time and live as a Bonian bey (noble family)? Here’s your chance!
The Muslibegovic House is a 250+ year old house that has painstakingly preserved the original eighteenth century decor in each of the 12 luxury suites, such as the ornate lamps, decorative ceilings, an open-air oven, and more.

National Monument Mehmedbasica Kuca
Looking for a unique opportunity to stay in a traditional Bosnian house? You’ll find it at Mehmedbasica Kuca!
Translated to Mehmedbasic’s House, this stone building was named after Muhamed Mehmedbašić (he was born in this town!), a Bosnian revolutionary and a backup in the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
The place features a handful of cozy rooms in traditional decor, including an open fireplace, intricate wooden carving, and a beautiful view of Stolac’s Old Town from the hammock on the terrace.

WESTERN BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA
Farm Stay Čardaklije
My great-aunt always used to say that you need three things to be happy: good food, good nature, and good company. Thankfully, Čardaklije has all three.
Čardaklije is a farm and hotel complex that’s located near the edge of Una National Park and features traditional wooden houses, fresh nature, and some of the best Bosnian cuisine in the entire country (seriously, check the reviews!)

Herceg Etno Selo Međugorje
One of the best ways to see Bosnia’s local culture is to get out and visit an etno selo (ethnic village). These large complexes typically serve local dishes, are found in historic wood or stone buildings, and are decorated in traditional decor… and Herceg Etno Selo is no different!
Located in the historical pilgrimage city of Međugorje, this etno village beautifully blends modern amenities and rooms with traditional culture and Bosnia’s legendary hospitality. It’s the perfect place to visit as a family, couple, or even solo!

CENTRAL BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA
Although Bosnia and Herzegovina is chock-full of natural wonders, it feels as if the central part of the country is especially brimming with waterfalls, lakes, and pyramids.
Yep, you read that right: Bosnia has pyramids! However, they’re probably not the kind that you’re thinking of. In the city of Visoko, there are mysterious pyramids covered in trees that are reported to have special powers, but I’ll let you be the judge of that.
Just an hour away is Travnik, which is popular for its ancient buildings and unique gastronomy. Check out the 15-th century Tranvik Castle and marvel at the colorful mosque, and if you have time, visit the friendly artist who sells souvenirs on the other side! After a long day of sightseeing, stop by Hari ‘Ćevabdžinica’ (famous for being one of *the* best places to eat cevapcici!).
Other well-known places to visit include Jajce, which is a popular destination thanks to its waterfalls, and Lake Jablanica.
Etno Village Cardaci
Located in the heart of this heart-shaped country (see what I did there? ), Cardaci is a delightful ethno village that will take you back to simpler times.
The 15 Bosnian-style cottages are downright cozy, with pops of color, natural materials, and traditional designs throughout. There’s also a restaurant serving authentic Bosnian dishes, a fish pond, and numerous lakes and springs to stroll by.
The entire place feels like the result of mixing a quaint English garden with traditional Bosnian houses!

Pyramid
If you’ve already started to plan your trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina, you might have heard of the city of Visoko and its mysterious pyramids.
No matter what your stance is (are they a hoax or real? We’ll never know 👻), there’s one thing we can all agree on: this pyramid-shaped holiday home is awesome!
Seriously, how many people can say that they’ve slept in a pyramid?
Pyramid is probably one of the most unique accommodations in Bosnia (and, let’s face it, in Europe) thanks to its unique shape and inspiration from the city that it’s located in.
Besides the shape, this holiday home is in the heart of nature and features a lovely terrace (with an amazing view!), opportunities to hike, and a super friendly host.

Best of all, you don’t have to go anywhere to search for food — the hosts have a restaurant and bar nearby that serves Bosnian food and can even deliver it to your tent!
There are plenty of activities nearby, such as taking a boat trip out on the lake, hiking, or swimming.

Dolina Sreće
Possibly the most beautifully-named hotel in this entire list (the name translates to Valley of Happiness!), you’ll certainly feel ecstatic at Dolina Sreće.
Dolina Sreće is a newly-building etno selo complex that looks like it came straight out of a fairytale. There are so many charming details, from the cozy cabins to the wooden swings, babbling brook, and singing birds, that you’ll fall in love from the moment you arrive.
Did I mention that each cabin also has a theme? For example, the Little Red Riding Hood cabin features red and white details and a bed that looks similar to the one in the fairytale.

EASTERN BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA
Eastern Bosnia & Herzegovina is bordered by Serbia and characterized by lush, dense forests and rivers. Don’t miss the Drina River — and especially the Drina River House! — on your way here.
Ethno Village Stanisici
If you’re planning to travel from Serbia to Bosnia (or vice versa), definitely add this charming hotel complex to your itinerary.
Although Stanisici appears to be a typical ethno village at first, it has something that makes it stand out from the rest: the buildings in the complex were taken from all over Bosnia!
That’s right: the owners searched all around the country to find traditional buildings, brought them back to the hotel, and remodeled them so that guests could also enjoy staying in an authentic Bosnian cabin (complete with genuine decor!) — just be sure to book a Bungalow if you want to go for this option.
Stanisici Ethno Village has everything you need for a relaxing vacation, including three restaurants, a spa and wellness center, gym, and even a museum explaining the history of ancient Bosnia.
